Julián Navas, as manager of Indepro and through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), has participated as a speaker in the virtual course on Water sanitation and treatment for Ibero-America. During this training, he taught the topics of Calculation and practical design of a WWTP.

The new Plan for Transfer, Exchange and Knowledge Management for the Development of Spanish Cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean —INTERCOONECTA— is AECID’s commitment to institutional strengthening in the region.

Within the framework of the new Plan, the IGME-CSIC and AECID organize this specialized initiative. Its activity is focused on presenting the basic principles of design and management of sanitation networks and treatment systems, as well as applicable regulations.

Objectives of the water sanitation and treatment course

This course is held on the Interconecta Virtual Classroom platform through the Spanish Cooperation Training Center in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. The dates were from June 5 to 23, 2023.

The management of urban wastewater is vital to maintaining rivers in good ecological status. Therefore, it is necessary to collect and treat these waters until they reach the required quality standards. This process ensures water quality before discharging it back into a public watercourse.

The course addresses sanitation networks, the construction of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), and the sustainability of water infrastructures. It also covers nature-based solutions, which the European Commission defines as “solutions inspired and supported by nature that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.”
