Experts in river restoration learn about the actions of the Life IP Duero project.
Restoration LIFE IP-Duero is the central axis of the expert panel held by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation (CHD) in Arévalo. This project, coordinated by the organization, seeks an integrated management of the basin’s water resources. To achieve this, innovative, sustainable, and participatory solutions are used, which can be exported to other river basins.
During Monday and Tuesday, the experts are carrying out various field visits to the area. The objective is to learn about the measures being implemented to improve fluvial connectivity. In particular, the removal of the Molino de Don Álvaro de Luna dam on the Adaja River stands out. This structure is approximately 55 meters long and 3.8 meters high.
Impact of the Restoration LIFE IP-Duero on the basin
Other examples of these actions are the decanalizations carried out in the Zapardiel River, specifically in the towns of Lomoviejo and Tordesillas (Valladolid). Furthermore, the river has been reconnected with sections of its old course. With the recovery of the original path, the biological communities will occupy their space once again. Therefore, the reconnection of the river with its fertile plains is achieved, which is essential for local socio-economic activity.
Likewise, the floodplain and the sinuosity typical of lowland rivers have been recovered. To accomplish this, more than half of the embankments in the Zapardiel River have been removed. Currently, the plantations occupy about 70 linear kilometers along the Zapardiel and Trabancos riverbeds. These Restoration LIFE IP-Duero actions are essential for the balance of the ecosystem.
Flood protection and safety
On the other hand, the renaturalization of these channels results in greater protection against floods. This is an urgent need in certain points of the Arevalillo River, where urban flooding is recurrent. Consequently, the action has provided the river with sufficient space while removing obsolete structures like some problematic dams.
By reducing the water height during floods, the protection of the populations is increased. In conclusion, the Restoration LIFE IP-Duero project improves the safety and health of our rivers.
