The Zapardiel and Trabancos rivers, part of the Life IP Duero project, are featured in the RTVE program “El escarabajo verde” (The Green Beetle).

Zapardiel and Trabancos Rivers, framed within the LIFE IP-Duero Project in which Indepro collaborates, are the stars of a new RTVE documentary. This report from “El Escarabajo Verde” focuses on the restoration and recovery of river ecosystems.

Furthermore, the documentary uses data from the Barrier Atlas produced by AMBER. There are more than one million artificial obstacles in European rivers. After centuries of human intervention, riverbeds have been modified in such a way that they no longer flow freely. Therefore, this has a negative impact on the river ecosystem as a whole.

Restoration of the Zapardiel and Trabancos Rivers

Spain is the third European country with the most artificial barriers in its rivers. Only Germany and Switzerland surpass us. In particular, the need to comply with the Water Framework Directives has been highlighted. Europe also has a new Nature Restoration Law especially dedicated to rivers.

The European Commission proposes to free at least 25,000 km of rivers by 2030. Removing obsolete barriers is vital for water to flow. However, restoring the entire ecosystem goes much further than just removing concrete.

Indepro’s collaboration in the LIFE project

Thanks to the management of the Zapardiel and Trabancos Rivers, the project aims to recover lost biodiversity. Indepro works alongside the CHD to implement nature-based solutions that improve the health of the watershed.
